1) The most significant event over the last year
for Atlanta's Accounting community has to be the continuous change
in regulation and oversight with respect to implementation and understanding
of Sarbanes-Oxley, as well as the creation of the Public Company
Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).
2) Overall, has the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley been positive or negative?
It depends on how you assess the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley. Short
term, with 2004 and 2005 being implementation years for public companies,
it has required tremendous focus and energy to meet compliance requirements
- some would say this focus and energy could be channeled more effectively
in executing business plans within these companies.
Long-term however, once compliance and monitoring systems are in
place and disciplines created from this process are developed, Sarbanes-Oxley
should have a consistent, positive input on these companies.
3) The most significant business trend affecting the accounting
industry today, I believe is the lack of sharp, young and intelligent
people entering our field. It seems as if they are opting for other
professions and entrepreneurial opportunities. I think our industry,
as a whole, needs to recognize this trend and place it at the forefront
of issues to tackle in 2005.
4) The most challenging part of my job is monitoring the proper
balance of time spent between personnel and clients.
